Part Two
1
Raskolnikov, who killed the old women, slept in the bed all through the night to the morning being rigid and losing his consciousness. When he woke up, he had a spasm feeling chills. He found bloody part on his clothes and cut it off. He hid what he had taken from the old pawnbroker under the paper on the wall. Nastasya (the landlady’s cook) and the yardkeeper came to his room and the yardkeeper handed him a summons but there was no relation with the murder.
Raskolnikov visited the bureau of police and talked with a scribe. In the summons it was written that Raskolnikov borrowed money and a complaint was brought for its payment. He was pleased in his mind because the complaint was not a murder case.
He talked with the police chief, deputy director and the clerk regarding the reason of his debt. The clerk taught Raskolnikov how to write conventional excuses to the complaint.
After that, the police chief and the deputy director asked him about his action of the previous night but there was nothing special and he left the bureau.
2
After returning to his room Raskolnikov brought out what he had stolen. He prowled and hid them under a stone on a backyard of an ironworks or something near Neva river. On his way home he visited Razumikhin but they talked little. Raskolnikov introduced a part-time job but Raskolnikov refused it.
After that, he was smashed with a lash by a driver and was given alms of 20 kopecks, which however he threw away to the river. After he walked around about 6 hours, he returned to his room, when he heard a hallucination that the deputy director rushed in to complain toward the landlady. His psychology was not good and felt like a sleepwalker. Nastasya brought food but he lost his consciousness after drinking water.
3
Raskolnikov awoke having dreamed a bad dream and also being half-conscious. Meanwhile Zosimov, a doctor, came and examined him and told there was nothing serious. Money from his mother arrived. Raskolnikov explained the money Raskolnikov was demanded payment of and the results to took back the signed acknowledgement of his debt. Razumikhin bought and gave Raskolnikov changes of clothes and others. Raskolnikov examined things he had stolen (he already had carried them out). Again he slept down. When he got up, Razumikhin told Raskolnikov to have prepared the personal belongings.
4
Doctor Zosimov came to Raskolnikov’s room while he was lying. Razumikhin talked that a paint artisan Mikolai was suspected to commit a murder and investigated by the police. Mikolai found a golden ear ring in the box he picked up and took it to Dushkin and borrowed money. Dushkin thought it had a relation with the murder case and brought to the police. Mikolai said that he picked the ring up but there arose a suspicion because he tried to hang himself. When Raskolnikov heard about that, suddenly he asked “is it outside the door ?”
5
Unexpectedly Donya’s fiancé Luzhin visited Raskolnikov’s room. He looked no longer young and there was an arrogant and stand-offish air about him. There was an omen of his visit from the letter from Raskolnikov’s mother. However, Raskolnikov did not like Luzhin and Raskolnikov told the bridegroom’s opinion, which introduced Luzhin a bad feeling. As a result, there happened a hostile atmosphere. Raskolnikov even said “I will drop you down under stairs, as you said bad things about my mother”. Luzhin left being angry. Zosimov, the doctor, had another interest about Raskolnikov.
6
Raskolnikov left his room wearing clothes as soon as he became alone. He thought he would finish the matter resolutely but he was not sure about it. He went along streets and entered the “Crystal Palace”. He read the article of newspaper about the murder case. He met Zamyotov. Raskolnikov asked Zamyotov a riddle about the murder case, which reminded Raskolnikov that he had hidden holding the ax behind the door.
Raskolnikov provoked Zamyotov saying “How do you think if it is me who killed Alyona and Lizaveta Ivanovna ? ”. Zamyotov denied it saying “I do not believe it “.
Raskolnikov met Razumikhin. Razumikhin invited Raskolnikov but he declined it. Razumikhin got angry with his refusal of the favour.
Raskolnikov approached the bureau of police but went around it and entered the room where he committed the murder. The room was under construction and there was not any sign of the disaster. He talked with an artisan and a yardkeeper.
7
Drunk Marmeladov was hit by a carriage and seriously injured. Raskolnikov happened to encounter the accident and carried Marmeladov to his home. His wife Katerina said “Ah he finally reached his goal”. She suffered from poverty and sickness. And she also said “Please let him die quietly just when he dies”. A doctor came and said there was no hope. A monk came. Sonya came. Her costume gave a hint of the secret society where she dwelled. The repentance and sacrament ceremony were finished. Katerina raged at the monk who asked forgiveness of her husband. Katerina told Marmeladov, who was begging for forgiveness, to keep silent. Marmeladov yelled at Sonya begging forgiveness for his sin. He died in Sonya’s arms.
Raskolnikov gave Katerina 20 rubles and left. Polenka run after him and asked him his name and address. She told her father taught her the Bible. In Raskolnikov’s mind there arose pride and confidence.
Raskolnikov visited Razumikhin’s house. Razumikhin emphasised the talk between Raskolnikov and Zamyotov in the Crystal Palace. Raskolnikov came back to his room and noticed the light was lit. His mother and sister were waiting him for 1 hour and a half already and he became faint but recovered his consciousness soon after.
