Part Three
1
Raskolnikov tried to persuade his mother and sister to go back to their home, even though they just met each other. His mother told her thought hesitating to leave so soon but his sister Dounia said they worried Raskolnikov. He told about the talk between him and Luzhin and told Dounia to broke their engagement because she was going to marry for the sake of Raskolnikov and must not sacrifice herself. Mother and sister left there accompanied by Razumihin.
Razumihin took them to their inn telling them that Nastasha would take care of him, he would inform his mother and sister Raskolnikov’s condition and promised to let Raskolnikov to receive medical treatment of Zosimov, the doctor. On the way to go there, Razumihin declared to endeavour to pay attention for the family.
Razumihin introduced the women to the inn, criticizing Luzhin, Dounia’s fiancée, that the place of the inn Luzhin had decided was not good. Razumihin conceived an affection for Dounia. Razumihin left the inn but returned again there and told Raskolnikov slept deeply. And he brought Zosimiv after the medical treatment of Raskolnikov. Zosimiv told the mother and sister not to have a serious feelings.
2
When Razumihin got up in the morning, he thought that his abuse on Luzhin, the fiancé of Dounia, was disgusting without knowing Luzhin well. Razumihin came to the inn where Raskolnikov’s mother and sister stayed. He told about Raskolnikov whom they had not seen so long as three years, saying that Raskolnikov was cold-hearted and mixed of different personalities and Raskolnikov did not love humans.
Razumihin terribly found that the mother and sister were poorly dressed. Razumihin said that Dounia looked just like Raskolnikov and accused Raskolnikov about the meeting between Raskolnikov and Luzhin. Razumihin read Luzhin’s letter, writing he did not want to see Raskolnikov because of his rudeness. Dounia insisted their presence.
3
Mother and sister came to Raskolnikov’s room. He is well but he looked pale and vague. He told that Marmeladov was run over by a carriage and died and gave the money to Marmeladov’s family sent by his mother. Raskolnikov said he disagreed with the marriage of Dounia and Luzhin. Dounia claimed not to be a sacrifice. To mother, Pulcheria, Raskolnikov seemed fainted.
Raskolnikov read the letter from Lizhin to his mother and said they were slandered. Luzhin wrote that Raskolnikov must not attend the meeting between him and mother and sister. But Dounia asked her brother to attend and Razumihin as well.
4
Sonia visited Raskolnikov’s room to tell Katerina Ivanovna’s wish to attend Marmeladov’s funeral. There was a complicated atmosphere in the face to-face meeting of Sonia, Pulcheria and Dounia. Raskolnikov welcomed them actively and introduced Sonia to his family, thinking Sonia’s situation to be a girl who ran a suspicious life that Luzhin revealed to his mother and sister in the letter.
Sonia told that the family could have the funeral by the money Raskolnikov had given them and to come to the funeral. Mother and sister left the room. In the conversation of mother and daughter, there was a Dounia’s comment to blame Luzhin.
Raskolnikov went out with Razumihin to visit Porfiry, the preliminary court judge.
On their way to Porfiry Raskolnikov made fun of Razumihin’s manner in Raskolnikov’s room.
In Sonia’s way home a man appeared, who stayed in the neighbouring room to that of Sonia.
5
Raskolnikov was going to introduce himself to Porfiry but he could not cease his laughing thinking the conversation between Razumihin. Razumihin struck the table because of Raskolnikov’s teasing and fell down. Porfiry thought funny of it. Porfiry told Raskolnikov was only one person who did not come to the police among people who pawned to the old woman Alyona Ivanovna.
Raskolnikov felt irritated of whether the police knew the truth or not. Porfiry told the dispute in the yesterday meeting that a crime was a protect against inadequacy of the social system. In response to it Razumihin told his own opinion that if the society was normally organized, all the crime would disappear.
Porfiry gave a talk of the paper “about the crime” that Raskolnikov contributed to the newspaper. Raskolnikov wrote about humans who had the right to commit torts and crimes. They discussed about ordinary and extraordinary men. Raskolnikov told that the extraordinary men had the right to allow their conscience to overcome certain obstacles if there was salvage significance for all mankind, whereas the ordinary men would be submissive.
Extraordinary people were extremely rare and Porfiry would unnecessarily be anxious about it. A criminal would be deserved if he was found. A conscientious person suffered himself, which is punishment.
Porfiry asked whether Raskolnikov himself would overcome a certain obstacle and commit murder. Raskolnikov did not reply to it with arrogant contempt. Porfiry asked if Raskolnikov saw a painter. But it was Porfiry’s trap, which Raskolnikov revealed.
6
After leaving the police, Raskolnikov and Razumihin talked over Porfiry’s reception. Raskolnikov thought that Porfiry didn’t find the truth. Razumihin was angry that the police was suspicious about Raskolnikov. Raskolnikov said that a cultured and experienced person differently expressed. Suddenly Raskolnikov felt anxious and returned to his room to look into the hole where things robbed from the old woman were hidden.
Being talked that a man visited, Raskolnikov ran after him. When Raskolnikov asked the man, he said “murderer”. Raskolnikov returned his room and fell down in the sofa. He dreamed he had attacked the old woman on her head. When he waked up, he saw a man, who gave his name Arkady Ivanovich Svidrigailov.
